Paradyskloof · the mountainside, opposite the kloof

The view faces the same mountains, from the other slope

Paradyskloof sits on the mountainside on Stellenbosch's western edge, a short drive from Jonkershoek but architecturally its own thing — mostly newer, architect-built homes climbing the slope, rather than the valley's mix of old werf and working farm.

Where Jonkershoek's spec problem is often about respecting an old sash window, Paradyskloof's is closer to the opposite: newer homes built specifically for an elevated mountain view, with glass sized for that view first and sun exposure worked out afterwards.

Elevation changes the sun and wind brief

A home built up a slope catches more direct, less obstructed sun through the middle of the day than an equivalent window on the valley floor, and it's more exposed to wind that would otherwise be broken up by trees and lower buildings. Which elevation and orientation a specific Paradyskloof home sits on changes the answer more than it does on a flatter Jonkershoek farm plot — we measure orientation on site rather than assume from the street.

Less heritage constraint, more architectural intent

Paradyskloof doesn't carry the rural conservation overlay that covers Jonkershoek, so exterior shading generally has more design freedom here. What replaces it is architectural intent: many of these homes are built around frameless glass and minimal detailing, so a bulky retrofit blind undoes the point of the build. A concealed, ceiling-recessed system usually suits this architecture far better than it would suit a heritage homestead.

What we usually specify here

  • Concealed, ceiling-recessed blinds for frameless glass walls on architect-built homes.
  • External venetians on hard west-facing elevations, stopping heat before it reaches the glass.
  • Motorised control as the default, since much of this glass runs too wide or too high for a chain to make sense.
