Folding-arm awnings · Jonkershoek valley

Shade over the stoep, gone the moment the wind sensor calls it

A retractable fabric awning on spring-tensioned folding arms — no posts, no permanent roof, and a motorised wind sensor as standard, not an upgrade, for a valley that gets serious wind twice a year for two different reasons.

An awning turns a baking north-facing stoep back into a usable room through harvest season, then retracts to let a low winter sun back in through the same window. No posts means no interrupted vineyard view and no clutter around a braai area.

Why wind sensing isn't optional here

Jonkershoek's summer south-easter funnels straight up the valley floor most afternoons — a genuinely different, more consistent gust than the wider Stellenbosch area sees. Winter is the opposite problem: stacked cold fronts have driven gusts past 100–120km/h through the Winelands, arriving with heavy rain rather than a dry-season blow. An awning caught open in either event doesn't survive it. Every folding-arm awning we fit here is motor-and-sensor as standard, so it retracts on its own before the gust arrives, not after.

Cassette options for exposed positions

  • Full cassette — fabric and arms sealed away — for stoeps that catch the valley's afternoon gusts directly.
  • Semi-cassette or open mounting for sheltered werf courtyards, where the exposure is milder.
  • Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics that hold their colour under the valley's summer UV.

Being honest about the limits

An awning is a shade product, not a rain product — fine for light drizzle at a pitch, never for the storm rain a winter cold front can bring. Fixing substrate matters too: a stone werf wall, a timber-framed veranda and a new steel-framed build all take the bracket differently, which is exactly what the in-home measure is for.

Heritage overlay, if it applies

On a heritage-graded homestead, an awning is an exterior change and may need approval under Stellenbosch's rural conservation overlay before it goes up — a process that can add four to eight weeks. We bring drawings and a colour spec to that conversation at the measure stage so it doesn't hold up the fitting day.
