Founded in 1679, and still the reason the valley has a name
Stellenbosch sits at the mouth of the Jonkershoek valley, close enough for us to cover on the same free-measure visit — but its building stock and its wind exposure are both wider-ranging than the valley's own farm-and-reserve split.
We measure and fit in Stellenbosch regularly — oak-avenue heritage cottages near the historic centre, student-let townhouse blocks, and the newer homes on the town's edges closer to the valley road. That's a wider range of building ages than Jonkershoek itself, so we treat each property on its own glazing and exposure rather than a single town-wide rule.
A stronger, steadier wind than the valley gets
Stellenbosch sits close enough to False Bay to feel real, consistent strength from the Cape Doctor south-easter through spring and summer. Jonkershoek gets the same wind system, but it's already been funnelled and reshaped by the mountains before it reaches the valley floor — a different exterior-shading brief entirely. An awning or external venetian specified for a Stellenbosch garden terrace gets sized for a steadier daily gust than one we'd spec on a homestead stoep further up the valley.
A stricter heritage core
Central Stellenbosch carries some of the most tightly protected heritage streetscapes in the Winelands — well beyond the general rural conservation overlay that covers Jonkershoek itself. A Dorp Street-adjacent cottage or an oak-avenue townhouse usually needs a more careful, more visibly sympathetic approach to any exterior change than a working farm further up the valley road.

- Sunscreen rollers on garden- or courtyard-facing glass in the newer homes on the town's edges.
- Wind-rated, motorised awnings on any exterior space, sized for a stronger, steadier gust than the valley itself sees.
